Anka and Kızıl Elma: The Stars of Turkish Defense Industry in the Sky

Turkey’s defense industry has made significant strides in recent years, especially in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). Two of the most notable projects in this area are TUSAŞ’s Anka and Baykar’s Kızıl Elma. Both systems are performing exceptionally well in the air, equipped with cutting-edge technology, and mechanically flawless.

Anka: The Pride of TUSAŞ

Anka is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ). It is designed for a wide range of missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition, and can operate in day or night and in adverse weather conditions. The system is equipped with payloads such as an electro-optical camera, infrared sensors, radar, and other advanced detection systems. The Anka also features a digital flight control system, electro-mechanical actuators, and high-reliability flight control sensors. It is capable of long-duration flights at high altitudes. The flight control software for Anka is developed by TUSAŞ engineers.

Kızıl Elma: Baykar’s Unmanned Combat Aircraft

Kızıl Elma, developed by Baykar, is Turkey's first unmanned combat aircraft. The Kızıl Elma completed its first flight on December 14, 2022. It is capable of flying at both subsonic and supersonic speeds, and its ability to take off and land from short-deck aircraft carriers is a notable feature. Kızıl Elma is equipped with an AESA radar, providing excellent situational awareness, and it has automated takeoff and landing capabilities. With a maximum takeoff weight of 6 tons, the aircraft can stay in the air for up to 5 hours, with a cruising speed of 0.6 Mach. (Source)

Differences and the Role of Software

While both systems are mechanically outstanding, there are subtle differences in their design that influence their performance. Anka is optimized for long-duration high-altitude missions, while Kızıl Elma is designed for faster speeds and greater maneuverability, which are essential for combat scenarios. These differences stem from the varying design and integration approaches in their software architectures.

Anka’s software is optimized for endurance and high-altitude operations, ensuring reliability during extended missions. On the other hand, Kızıl Elma’s software focuses on enabling quick responses and high agility, which are crucial for combat situations.

3 Conclusion: The Importance of Software

In conclusion, both systems offer mechanical excellence, but their performance largely depends on the differences in their software. Advanced and optimized software enhances the capabilities of UAVs and UCAVs, ultimately increasing mission success rates. Therefore, the software development and integration processes are critical to the success of both Anka and Kızıl Elma.
